Role profile

What is a business intelligence analyst?

Business Intelligence Analysts are expected to turn data into actionable insights that help organisations make strategic and tactical decisions.

They will collect, assemble and analyse data using business intelligence software applications, tools which they will also use to present the findings back to stakeholders in charts, reports, dashboards and KPIs.

What are the main responsibilities and skills of a BI Analyst?

  • BI Analysts typically require proficiency with SQL or Python for accessing, navigating and assembling complex data sets.
  • They are usually confident in managing data sets in Excel, but will be more hireable and more effective if they have direct experience of working with data visualisation software, such as Microsoft Power BI and Tableau.
  • Alongside technical skills, BI Analysts should also be good communicators and be creatively minded. They should be particularly good at storytelling, and are often passionate about visual design as well.
  • They are expected to be in tune with their industry or area of business as this insight helps them discern what information to present to their stakeholders.
