Lothian Joint Valuation Board
The challenge
Lothian Valuation Joint Board is a Public Body established in 1996 to provide valuation services to the four councils of Lothian: City of Edinburgh, East Lothian, West Lothian and Midlothian.
New to apprenticeships, the Board nevertheless saw opportunities for an Apprentice to acquire skills and knowledge during their training, which could be shared with existing staff members
The solution
The Board already had an excellent relationship with QA as a training provider and believed that an apprentice would receive excellent training and development from us, providing them with the technical grounding, skills, and experience to grow and contribute effectively to our work and our objectives.
“The Modern Apprentice role is now embedded in the structure of our organization, and this has allowed us to strengthen our existing culture of nurturing development and career progression”

The result
Two important administration tasks were taken on by apprentices. Both were essential in the collation of rental information and required great attention to detail, good communications skills, and understanding. The results were outstanding.
The apprentice’s contribution ensured the Board had the most accurate and up-to-date records available and as a result avoided the mandatory chaser letters or penalties that might have been exercised in absence of this data.
The Board has been able to offer employment within their core structure to the first two Modern Apprentices. The program has also offered opportunities for mentoring and coaching for existing employees who are not in a line management role.
“We did not expect the apprentices to move into core roles within our organization so quickly, which has enabled us to recruit further Modern Apprentices,” Hannah Carruthers, Lothian Joint Valuation Board.
