Apprenticeships

Harper Macleod

Learn how Harper Macleod built a strong partnership with QA to support apprenticeship opportunities across the board.

Harper Macleod

The challenge

Harper Macleod recognises that their people are critical to their business success. Working on a “grow your own” basis, they engaged with QA to introduce a raft of apprenticeships that give young people the opportunity to grow into the right role for them across the various departments in the firm.

The solution

Sixty-three Harper Macleod employees are either working towards their apprenticeships or have completed an apprenticeship  – this represents 14% of their workforce. Of these, 24 are currently working towards an apprenticeship or have completed in the last year.

The remaining 21 employees have moved into promoted roles across the firm, including trainee paralegal roles, and roles within HR, L&D, Marketing, Finance, Secretarial, and IT. The firm has recruited 34 apprentices since March 2024 and employed apprentices in all of their four offices across Scotland.

“We continue to support young learners far beyond their apprenticeships by offering permanent positions and the opportunity to expand their knowledge into different departments.”

Rona Cargill
HR Director

The result

The grounding that candidates have been given through their apprenticeship enables them to add value and become ambassadors for Harper Macleod.

In this way, apprentices can forge their own long-term careers with continued support from mentors and colleagues, whilst adding value to the business. Harper MacLeod invests in the training and development of all their apprentices.

They have seen a tenfold return on this investment, irrespective of age or background.
