The challenge
NHS Lanarkshire recognised the need to address their aging workforce. They chose apprenticeships as the route to solving this challenge, as well as bringing the additional benefit of offering young people opportunities.
As an Anchor Organisation, they are also focused on enhancing the wellbeing and employment prospects of those in local communities. Through a QA-run apprenticeship programme, they offer valuable opportunities to young people across Lanarkshire.
The solution
An initial challenge was to digitise and streamline the information request process. This transitioned from a manual mailbox process, which was a time-consuming process involving overseeing and logging requests on an Excel spreadsheet, to a streamlined, digital process on a new software platform with an automated approach.

The result
Their apprentices took on the challenge. The resulting productivity gains within the department allowed staff more time to concentrate on the outputs of the requests.
This example is just one way in which apprentices are working within NHS Lanarkshire. Passionate about welcoming young talent into the organisation, NHS Lanarkshire currently recruit apprentices in business administration, pharmacy, healthcare, and IT.
“Since starting our partnership with QA, we have had four existing staff members go through QA qualifications, along with seven new apprentices undertaking SCQF level 6 and 8 qualifications ,” says Nicole Grant, Senior Employability Advisor.
